At Mindful Education, we believe that strong phonics skills open the door to fluent reading. Our Phonics Pathway is built on a clear five‑stage progression that aligns with how young children naturally learn. By combining trusted official materials with our own thoughtfully designed resources, we guide students from recognising sounds to decoding words with confidence — helping them reach the stage where a word on the page becomes readable, and a sound they hear becomes something they can build and spell.
Five‑Stage Phonics Pathway
Stage 1 — Pre‑Phonics Foundations (K1–K2)
This introductory stage is designed especially for young learners who learn best through touch, movement, and play. Drawing inspiration from Jolly Phonics, our colourful, sensory‑rich materials help children develop early sound awareness in a joyful, engaging environment
- Early sound awareness with vocabulary growth — Children explore basic phonemes while naturally expanding their vocabulary through themed activities.
- Fine‑motor readiness for writing — Tracing, colouring, and early writing exercises strengthen hand‑eye coordination and prepare children for future writing tasks.
Stage 3 — Short Vowels & CVC Word Building
This is a breakthrough stage where children begin to read words, not just recognise letters
- Blend and segment CVC words (e.g., cat, hen, pig, dog, bus)
- Experience the excitement of reading their first words independently
- Make the essential leap from “knowing letters” to “decoding words”
Stage 2 — Mastering Pure Letter Sounds
Students learn the pronunciation of all 26 letters. With structured official materials supported by our centre’s custom worksheets, children learn to distinguish each sound accurately and build a strong, intuitive link between letters and their corresponding sounds.
- Recognizing subtle differences in letter pronunciation lays the foundation for future phonics and spelling.
- Cultivating a natural connection between sound and letter helps children immediately associate the correct sound when they see a letter.
- Introducing simple vocabulary alongside pure phonics training helps children connect phonemes with everyday language, improving their language sense.

Stage 4 — Long Vowels & Advanced Spelling Patterns
Students explore long vowel sounds and common spelling patterns such as Magic E, ai, ay, ea, ee, and more. They learn that one sound can be spelled in different ways — a key concept for fluent reading and spelling.

Stage 5 — Consonant Blends & Reading Fluency
Children learn to recognise and pronounce consonant blends (e.g., bl, cr, st, sh, ch) quickly and accurately.
- Read simple English story books independently
- Transition smoothly into Junior English Reading or the Cambridge English Pathway
